RIVERSIDE--- California Baptist battled Abilene Christian for the Western Athletic Conference series on Sunday morning and walked away with a 10-5 win. Michael Carpentier came up big in the rubber match with two home runs and four RBI on the day. The Lancers improved to 23-21 overall and 12-9 in conference with the series win over the Wildcats.
After going down by one, Carpentier delivered a solo shot over right field to tie the game. Jake Skipworth helped the Lancers secure an early lead that was never relinquished with a single to left field that scored Mitchel Simon. CBU reinforced their lead with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second that sent home Josh Paino.
Carpentier got the scoring started again with his second homer of the game while two runners were on in the bottom of the fourth. Cole Howarth tallied a run after he was batted in by a single from Josiah Chavez. The Lancers collected five runs in total in the third after Skipworth made it home off a passed ball by the Wildcats catcher. Garret Ostrander got on base with a single in the bottom of the fifth and rounded the bases for his second run of the game off a sacrifice fly from Simon. Skipworth delivered another well-placed single for his second RBI of the day after Carpentier safely made it home for the tenth run.
ACU attempted to claw their way back into the game and loaded four runs on the board across the seventh and ninth inning to put themselves within five of the Lancer's lead. Ryan Delgado cut off their momentum with the final strikeout of the ninth inning, delivering a perfect three pitches for the win.
Carpentier led the squad on Sunday offensively with his four RBI and three hits on the day. Skipworth followed closely behind with two hits and two RBI, while Ostrander and Simon both walked away with an RBI. Jacob Wilson, usually a reliever for CBU, got his first start on the mound and his sixth win of the season, allowing just three hits during his five innings of action.
The Lancers will return to Totman Stadium on Tuesday evening for a midweek tilt against the Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara at 5:00 p.m.
