Lancers Kick Off 2023 Season on Thursday Night

RIVERSIDE--- California Baptist women's soccer officially kicks off its 2023 season on Thursday night as the Lancers return for their sixth season in the NCAA Division I. CBU has already secured two exhibition wins in preparation for its stacked 18-game slate and will start the year at UCR in the infamous Crosstown Showdown.
The Lancers will host nine teams throughout the year at the CBU Soccer Stadium and will play nine games on the road before hosting the 2023 WAC Tournament in October. During preseason polls, the California Baptist was voted to finish fourth in conference play behind Utah Valley, Grand Canyon, and Seattle University. This will be the second year of NCAA Division I postseason eligibility for CBU after qualifying for the WAC tournament last year.
The squad includes 23 returners and 11 newcomers, including a transfer from TCU. Michelle Slater was a four-year starter in Texas and will bring an experienced touch to the pitch this season. Other transfers include Riley Goosen-Brown from CSUN and Lauren Mitra from Louisiana Tech.
The Lancers return Lourdes Bosch and Taylor Summit, who were both named to the WAC All-Conference last season. Bosch was also nationally recognized during the preseason by United Soccer Coaches as an NCAA Division I Midfielder to Watch and as well as within the WAC as a Preseason All-WAC team selection. Noa Schumacher will also be returning to the squad and was named the Preseason WAC Goalkeeper of the Year.
CBU opens the 2023 campaign with the Crosstown Showdown against UCR on Thursday in hopes of starting the year with a win and handling some unfinished business after tying the Highlanders 3-3 at home last season. The Lancers will welcome the New Jersey Institute of Technology for their home opener on August 24th at 7 p.m. and will also play UTSA, 2022 NCAA Tournament participants, at home before heading to Eugene to face Oregon in early September. The Lancers will close out preseason play on the road in Northern California against San Jose State and Sacramento State.
The team will begin conference play at home against Utah Valley, the preseason WAC favorites and 2022 NCAA Tournament participants. The Lancers will also face Seattle, Stephen F. Austin, and UTRGV in Riverside before traveling to Utah Tech, Southern Utah, Grand Canyon, Tarleton, and Abilene Christian to play on the road.
Upon their return, CBU will host the WAC Tournament from October 29th to November 4th at the CBU Soccer Stadium.
California Baptist is led by head coach Kristen St. Clair, who returns for her 17th season at CBU. St. Clair boasts a 199-78-33 overall record and is just one win shy of her 200th at California Baptist. Tim Strader has stepped into the associate head coach position, and Tyrone Martin joins the squad as an assistant coach. The staff also welcomed CBU Alum Carissa Christensen as a volunteer assistant coach for the 2023 season.
