Brooks Earns Hat Trick as Lancers Tally First Shutout of the Year
8/31/2023 10:45:00 PM | Women's Soccer
The teams opened with a quiet first 20 minutes of play, each looking for rhythm on the CBU Soccer Stadium field. After Malia Cerdon fired off the first shot for the Lancers in the 13th minute, Kristen St. Clair's squad was able to break down UTEP's defense a little more and had their first major opportunity of the game with a free kick right outside the 18-yard box. Bosch stepped up and placed the ball perfectly in the top right netting of the goal, just past the stretched arms of the Miner's keeper.

"Offensively, I was really impressed with our finishing; we've been working on that a lot in training," says St. Clair.
The Lancer's second goal of the evening would come not even five minutes later after Brooks found the back of the net off a well-paced ball from Kaylee Hauck down the left-center of the field. UTEP managed to hold CBU's two-goal lead until the end of the half but found themselves immediately under pressure again by the Lancer offense from the start of the next 45 minutes. Ramirez picked up her first goal of the year just two minutes into the second half after slipping a ball near post for the third goal of the match.

Taylor Summit found herself behind a freekick in the 55th minute after she was fouled and lobbed the ball towards the back post, where Frida Murrieta would flick on the ball to Ramirez for her first brace of the 2023 season. Syra Valdez got in on the attack as well and earned her first assist of the year after passing Brooks a ball on top of the 18-yard box, which she spun just out of reach of the UTEP keeper for her second of the evening. Just ten minutes later, Brooks would finalize the score with her third goal of the night, a powerful shot into the top of the netting from the six-yard line.

"Having 11 different players involved in the scoring summary is a testament to the industrious depth and selflessness of this team," says St. Clair. "Defensively, our shape and execution were much better, earning the shutout. Lourdes scored a great free kick, Jayden scored a brace, going 2 for 2, and Marcella hit a hat trick, going 3 for 3."
Mia Scranton, Morgan Witz, McKenna Ray, Summit, Hauck, Valdez, and Murrieta all finished the game with one assist, and Cerdon ended the night with two shots on goal. The victory against UTEP is the first shutout of the season for the Lancers after CBU's defense allowed just four shots and no corners from UTEP through 90 minutes.
"We did not feel that we performed as well as we were capable of in our last game. The discussion this week has been to respond with a stronger, more consistent performance on both sides of the ball, and we certainly did that tonight," remarks St. Clair. "We now turn our focus and start preparing for our next opponent on Sunday."
The Lancers return to CBU Soccer Stadium on Sunday, September 3rd, for a match against UTSA at noon.
