RIVERSIDE - Today was no ordinary Thursday morning basketball game. A record crowd of 4,417 fans packed the Dale E. and Sarah Ann Fowler Events Center to witness CBU women's basketball cruising to a 75-55 victory over the University of Texas Rio Grand Valley. The 2024 version of the annual Education Day game set a new women's basketball attendance record, topping last year's previous record of 4,250 vs. NM State.
Filipa Barros rose to the occasion on Thursday morning, dropping a team-high 15 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. The Portuguese National has scored in double figures in eight of the past nine games and increased her scoring average by five points during that stretch. Her 13.0 points per game is second on the team behind Chloe Webb's 19.9.
Webb, like Barros, also posted a double-double against the Vaqueroes, scoring 14 points with 11 boards and four steals. Nae Nae Calhoun scored a season-high 13 points while dishing out a game-high six assists. Khloe Lemon improved her double-digit scoring streak to eight in a row with a dozen on Thursday.
The Lancer defense shined brightest early on, holding UTRGV to just 11 points in the first quarter, and denied them any scoring for over five minutes from the end of the first to the middle of the second quarter. The Vaqueros were 0-11 from the floor during that stretch, while the Lancers went on a 13-0 run on 6-10 shooting from the field.
The Lancers increased their lead to 17 in the second quarter. With halftime looming, the Lancers stole the ball, which resulted in Calhoun launching a 30-foot three-pointer with time expiring that hit nothing but net to give CBU a 40-25 advantage at the half.
The Vaqueros came out of the break with a renewed fire, going on a 10-2 run in the opening two-and-a-half minutes of the third quarter. A quick timeout from Head Coach Jarrod Olson righted the ship and led to his Lancers closing the period on a 16-5 tear. CBU's lead peaked in the fourth quarter at 71-46 before cruising to the finish line for their fourth win this season by 20 or more points.
The newly minted 15-2 (7-1) Lancers have one more home game this week as Stephen F. Austin comes to Riverside on Saturday afternoon for a 1:00 p.m. tipoff.
