BOYDS, MARYLAND - The California Baptist University men's soccer team got the 2024 season underway on Thursday night against the Eagles of American University. Despite a combined 15 shots on the night, the contest would end as a nil-nil draw resulting in both programs beginning the season with a record of 0-0-1.
Head Coach Coe Michaelson reflected postgame, saying, "We didn't look as sharp as we did in our exhibitions, but it's a reminder that cross-country travel is very difficult. It will also take a little time with 17 new players and some very important returners still out, so we have to keep perspective."
On paper, the Lancers controlled the game in a convincing manner, outshooting the Eagles 8-7 overall, with both teams putting a pair of shots on frame. Returner Luis Borrero and newcomer Josh Hallenberger led the way with two shots each, with Hallenberger adding one on target. The second on-target shot was arguably the best chance either side had all night, coming from Erik Krohnstad, who blasted a shot from about 25 yards out in the 66th minute, keeping it low and forcing the opposing keeper to dive and get enough of a hand on it to earn a CBU corner kick.
We were close to scoring a few times, and their keeper made two great saves, but we will get better at creating more chances," Michaelson added about his early season offense. "On the other hand, we were solid at the back, and it's nice to start with a clean sheet. In the end, it was a credible draw cross-country against an experienced team full of returners, and we will grow from here."
True freshman Hugo Do Rego got the start in goal to begin the season, stopping one shot in each half. Do Rego was one of six Lancers to earn their first cap for the blue and gold, with five more newbies also earning their first minutes of official action in the season opener.
The Lancers will travel down the coast for their second match this week as they prepare for a game against #6 North Carolina. The Tar Heels pulled out a late win against UAB in Birmingham courtesy of a converted penalty kick in the 71st minute. Sunday's game is scheduled for 7:30 EST (4:30 Pacific) and will be aired on ACCNX, accessible through ESPN+.
