Lancers Battle Heat and Toreros to a Draw

RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist Lancers picked up their first draw of the season on Thursday evening against the University of San Diego after the match ended 1-1. Lauryn White matched an early goal from the Toreros in the second half to push the Lancers to 3-3-1 on the season.

"We're disappointed with the result tonight as we know we are capable of far better consistency, execution and performance," said Head Coach Kristen St. Clair. "We came out flat in the first half, costing us a goal. Second half intensity and performance was better as we created numerous scoring opportunities. Second half response was good but we know better and only 90 minutes of our best stuff will put us in a position to earn the result we want. We'll learn from this and go back to work in training."

USD came out from the get-go in the 100-degree weather in Riverside, tallying nine shots in the first half alone. The Toreros found the back of the net off a set-piece opportunity that ricocheted into the top right corner of the goal off a CBU defender for an early lead. After a slow offensive first half for the Lancers, Kristen St. Clair's squad picked up the pace and began to attack down the sides of the pitch, finding better opportunities with crosses after building out of the back. Kaylee Hauck drilled a cross from the left side that found White's right foot in the 61st minute to tie the match. CBU's next best opportunity came late in the game after Hauck dribbled through a sea of Toreros and got a shot off that missed just wide.

The evenly matched game saw USD out-shoot CBU 15 to 11, but the Lancers generated more corner-kick opportunities with six to San Diego's one. The tying goal marks White's first of the season, and the 1-1 result is the first time CBU came from behind to earn a point this year. San Diego moves to 0-3-3 on the season, while the Lancers maintain a three-game unbeaten streak.

California Baptist will return to the pitch next Thursday at 7:30 p.m. to host UC Riverside in an infamous Crosstown Showdown match. Lancer soccer tickets are on sale now HERE for all games at CBU Soccer Stadium.
