RIVERSIDE - The California Baptist University women's basketball team improved to 2-0 in Western Athletic Conference play on Saturday behind Khloe Lemon's record-breaking performance in the 77-50 win over Utah Valley. The sophomore went 11-18 from beyond the arc on Saturday afternoon and 13-20 overall to finish with a career-high 39 points.
Her 11 made three-pointers now stand as the all-time single-game record for CBU, and it ties the all-time for the WAC set back in 2013-14 by Abby Scott of New Mexico State. Lemon's 39-point effort also ties her for the most points in a game in CBU's Division I era, tying Britney Thomas, who also posted 39 at home in February 2019 against Seattle U. As it stands today, she is also tied for the most made three-pointers in the NCAA this season, sharing that honor with just one other player, Rachel Ullstrom of Richmond, who did it first against Oakland in November.
Most of Lemon's help in the scoring column came from Grace Schmidt and Nhug Bosch Duran, who added 13 and 12, respectively. As a unit, this was the second game this season that saw CBU shoot 50.9%, also going 27-53 against St. Mary's back in December, and it was the highest three-point percentage of the year at 55.9% (19-34).
The vision for the game was apparent early as the Lancers opened up the contest on a 20-4 run. Midway through the first quarter, Lemon showed signs of her game to come by hitting back-to-back-to-back-to-back three-pointers during a 17-5 run that gave CBU the lead they would never relinquish. The Lancers would cool off a bit in the second quarter but still took a 38-25 lead into the halftime break.
The offensive rhythm picked back up in the third for CBU as they went on runs of 6-0 and 8-0 to build their lead up to 24 at the end of the frame. The game was seemingly in hand at the start of the fourth quarter, but Lemon's heat check wasn't quite over. She hit the record-tying three-pointer just two minutes in and secured the new program mark with 6:08 to go. Three-pointers by Emma Johansson and CeCe Legaspi brought the deep ball count to 19 on the day, one shy of tying the program record for most team triples in a game, which has happened four times prior.
The Lancers now turn their attention to Thursday morning for the annual Education Day game, where local schools are invited to the Dale E. and Sarah Ann Fowler Events Center to catch a matinee game filled with action, fun, and entertainment. This year, fans will see Tarleton visit Riverside for the 11:00 a.m. game.
