RIVERSIDE --- Sophomore William Lawson has been tabbed the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Defender of the Week. Lawson scored a game winning goal and was a key fixture in a CBU backline that surrendered just one goal in two matches last week.
Lawson, a sophomore out of Paris, France, is in his first season with the Lancers. He has played all but 19 minutes of the Lancers' season thus far, earning the start in all 11 matches.
This past week, CBU hosted UNLV and Grand Canyon, finishing the week 1-0-1. The Lancers allowed just one goal, coming in a 1-1 draw against the Rebels. Their defensive efforts stepped up in Sunday's win against Grand Canyon as the Lancers shutout the visiting Lopes and held WAC leading goal scorer Junior Diouf to no shot attempts, a first this season.
Lawson was also the offensive hero in Sunday's victory. In the closing seconds of the first half, Lawson headed home a corner kick from Tizian Marth, giving the Lancers their only goal in a 1-0 win.
Sunday's goal was Lawson's first.
The Lancers are now 1-1-1 in WAC action as the season takes them on the road for their next two matches. CBU will battle Utah Valley this weekend and then will stay on the road to square off with Air Force.
CBU will be back in Riverside to host Utah Tech on October 26.
