CBU Pushes Win Streak to Eight with 13-8 Victory over Santa Clara

RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University men's water polo team kept up its winning ways with a solid 13-8 victory over the Santa Clara Broncos on Thursday afternoon at the Lancer Aquatics Center.
The win pushes CBU's winning streak to eight and, more importantly, a perfect 3-0 in West Coast Conference action. The Lancers are now 18-7 overall, while the Santa Clara Broncos suffered their first conference loss of the season and are 7-8 in total.
The Broncos came out hot, scoring the first two goals of the match in the opening 40 seconds of play off the hand of Imme van der Schaaf. From that point forward, the Lancers controlled the entirety of the match. CBU would score five straight goals to close the first period, including two from Michael Abshier to take a 5-3 advantage. The second period was also Lancer-heavy with the home squad scoring three goals compared to two for the Broncos to take a solid 8-5 lead into halftime.
The third period only featured one goal between the two teams as both squads tightened up their defenses. The Broncos attempted to mount a comeback in the fourth period with a 3-1 run to cut the lead to three with 2:41 remaining, but goals from Wyatt Bugbee and Luca Imbriolo would shut the door on the attempt. A penalty save from Tanner McCreary would further cement the 13-8 victory and keep CBU perfect in WCC play.
CBU got multiple goals from multiple sources, led by a hat-trick performance from Bugbee. Imbriolo, Rafa Martinez, and Abshier all contributed multiple scores in the match, with Abshier leading the way in points by tacking on two assists to his final line. In goal, McCreary was as solid as ever with 12 saves, an assist, and a steal in the full 32 minutes of action between the posts.
NEXT: The Lancers will head up north from Friday, October 24-25, to face Brown, Fresno Pacific, and Bucknell.
