CBU Sweeps Weekend in Pomona

POMONA, CA--- The California Baptist men's water polo team returned to Pomona on Saturday afternoon to finish the Gary Troyer Tournament and did so in sweeping fashion after tallying another pair of wins against Mount Saint Mary and Cal State Fullerton. The perfect 4-0 weekend improves CBU's record to 15-7 on the season.

In a high-scoring showdown, the Lancers kicked off the day with a decisive 20-11 victory over Mount Saint Mary. CBU started strong, dominating the first quarter with a remarkable seven goals, led by standout player Rafa Martinez, who scored three times. The Mountaineers managed to score four goals in both the second and third quarters, but their defense struggled to stave off the Lancers' offensive attack. The final quarter saw the Lancers continue to capitalize on their scoring opportunities, adding five more goals to their tally for the third victory of the weekend.

The second match of the day was CBU's most competitive of the weekend after going toe-to-toe against the Titans. CSUF jumped out with a two-goal lead after the first frame, but CBU settled in as the squads traded points and the lead through the next three quarters. Going into the final frame tied 10-10, it was Andrea Nuzzo who broke the tie with an early quarter goal. The Titans would tie it again before Nuzzo dented the twine again for a 12-11 victory and a perfect weekend in Pomona.

CBU will return to the Lancer Aquatic Center this week to take on Pepperdine University as West Coast Conference play begins on Thursday evening.
