RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University wrestling team is gearing up for a pair of home matches this week in Riverside as they welcome Utah Valley and Wyoming.
The Lancers opened up the season against #20 Stanford last weekend in Riverside, with the Cardinal besting the Lancers 29-12. CBU took four matches off Stanford in the defeat, which is tied for the most points they have scored against Stanford since 2017.
The week will open for the Lancers in Van Dyne Gym against the Utah Valley Wolverines. The dual will be a special one as it will be a FloWrestling Night in America feature and will serve as the conference opener for the Lancers and Wolverines. Utah Valley is 1-1 to begin the season, defeating Stanford at home 19-12 and losing to Oregon State 25-9 on the road in Corvallis. UVU and CBU already have a little matchup history this season, as a handful of these wrestlers squared off against each other at the Cyclone Invitational in early November in Ames.
This will be the fifth all-time matchup between the two programs, with UVU holding the advantage 4-1 in the all-time series. CBU's only win came in 2024 when they defeated the Wolverines 20-17 in Orem, Utah. The last time the two programs squared off in Riverside was in 2022, with the Wolverines defeating CBU 29-9. UVU has a handful of ranked wrestlers in its lineup for this week, including Penn State transfer #11 David Evans at 149lbs and NCAA qualifier #26 Haiden Drury.
The final dual of the week will also be a special one as it will be the Lancers' annual Events Center dual on Saturday evening at the Dale E. & Sarah Ann Fowler Events Center. The opponent will be #29 Wyoming, which is also a BIG 12 foe of the Lancers. The Cowboys are 1-2 to begin the season with a win over Western Wyoming and a pair of losses at the National Duals Invitational in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to #2 Ohio State and #9 Virginia Tech. This will be the fourth Events Center dual for the Lancers in their program history, as they have faced Ohio State, Indiana, and Iowa in previous dual seasons.
It will be the fourth-ever meeting between the Lancers and Cowboys, with Wyoming holding the 2-1 edge in the series. Wyoming took victory in the last two contests, and the Lancers won the first-ever matchup in the series, which was held back in 2023 in Laramie. The last time the two programs wrestled in Riverside was in November of 2023, with the Coyboys winning 28-12. Wyoming figures to feature several ranked wrestlers as well, including 2x NCAA Qualifier and 2025 All-American #5 Joey Novak and 3x NCAA qualifier #16 Jared Hill.
For the Lancers, they will enter the duals with a pair of ranked wrestlers, including #33 Jesse Vasquez at 141 pounds in his first season with CBU, after transferring from Arizona State. Vasquez was a Pac-12 champion at 141 pounds and an NCAA qualifier during his time with the Sun Devils. The other ranked wrestler for Derek Moore's squad will be #28 Remy Murillo at 133lbs. Murillo redshirted last season but still managed some impressive wins against Air Force and West Virginia. Murillo defeated Adam Mattin of Stanford in the opening dual by decision 13-11.
