
CBU Opens Big 12 Competition Against Utah Valley in Riverside

RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University wrestling team battled the Utah Valley Wolverines in its conference opener on Thursday evening, with the visiting Wolverines winning 26-9.
This was the second dual of the season for the Lancers after dropping its opener to #20 Stanford last weekend. For Utah Valley, it was their second dual victory of the season after taking down Stanford in its season opener in Orem, Utah.
#28 Bridger Ricks got the scoring started for Utah Valley at 125lbs with a win in sudden victory for the early 3-0 lead. Remy Murillo would answer right back for the Lancers with a decisive 13-7 victory over Geronimo Rivera. Murillo registered three takedowns in the match, including a clutch one in the third period to take the victory. 2022 NCAA qualifier #26 Haiden Drury would put three more on the board in the lone ranked matchup of the dual as he would defeat #33 Jesse Vasquez of the Lancers 3-1 for the decision victory.
Utah Valley's lead would grow to 149lbs as #11 David Evans would earn a technical fall for the first bonus points of the dual for the Wolverines. UVU would tack on three more points at 157lbs with a sudden victory via Mark Takara. CBU would get back on the scoreboard at 165lbs as Gabe Schumm would earn his first career win as a Lancer. Schumm fell behind 4-1 but would get a clutch takedown in the third period and the last-second escape to defeat Ryker Fullmer 5-4 for the decision win. Mason Espinoza would remain unbeaten in duals with a thrilling win in sudden victory over the Lancers at 174lbs. With the match tied at five apiece, Espinoza would gain the advantage over Tanner Lofthouse and finish him with a takedown to slice the Utah Valley lead down to 14-9.
The Wolverines would win the final three matches, including earning bonus points in two of the matches, to secure the dual victory 26-9.
NEXT: The Lancers will remain at home to take on #29 Wyoming in the Fowler Events Center on Saturday, November 22, at 6 PM.
