RIVERSIDE --- Riverside native Miranda De Nava was named the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Pitcher of the Week on Monday. De Nava made four appearances in the circle at the UNLV Leadoff Classic, as the Lancers began the season 3-2.
Head coach Brandon Telesco spoke highly of De Nava, a player he also coached last year with Cal, after her five-inning shutout of UNLV on opening night. "That was just a little bit of what we can expect. She's phenomenal. When she's on, she's capable of being one of the best in the nation. Everyone will find out what she's capable of soon enough."
De Nava struck out eight Rebels in five innings on Thursday. She surrendered only four hits as the Lancers blanked UNLV 8-0 to earn Telesco his first win as a Division I head coach.
The sophomore right-hander returned to the circle on Friday, making a relief appearance against Purdue. De Nava tossed a shutout inning with one strikeout.
Saturday saw De Nava make her second start of the season as CBU squared off with Purdue once again. The right-hander tossed 5.1 innings in which she struck out four batters, but she was tagged with the loss, her first of the season. Telesco brought De Nava in from the bullpen in CBU's final game, a rematch with UNLV, resulting in 2.2 innings of work with six punchouts.
De Nava was credited with the save to wrap up the week in Las Vegas.
The week concluded with De Nava totaling 14.0 innings in the circle. She struck out 19 batters and has a season ERA of 3.00.
CBU will be back in action this week as the CBU Classic gets underway from John C. Funk Stadium on Thursday. The Lancers will host LMU on Thursday at 6 p.m. and then return to action with two games on both Friday and Saturday, facing Saint Francis and CSU Bakersfield on both days. The Lancers will wrap up the CBU Classic on Monday against Hawaii.
