Two Lancers Selected on Day Two of the MLB Draft

RIVERSIDE --- Pitchers Cody New and Alfredo Capacete added to the history of the California Baptist University (CBU) baseball program on Sunday, as the two became the 43rd and 44th players to be selected in the MLB Amateur Player Draft. The duo of CBU selections increases the all-time number to 33 draftees under coach Gary Adcock.
New, a left-hander, was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers as the 343rd overall selection (11th round). Capacete, a right-hander, was taken in the 14th round by the Texas Rangers (417th overall).
Tabbed as the Lancers' ace for the last two seasons, New logged only eight outs on opening night before a season-ending injury sidelined the junior left-hander for the remainder of 2026. New showcased professional-grade work in 2025, a season that ended with First-Team All-WAC honors. The left-hander finished 6-3 with a 3.49 ERA across 80.0 innings of work. New struck out 98 batters in the 2025 campaign and held opposing hitters to a .217 batting average.
In his three seasons with the Lancers, New has 39 appearances (23 starts), totaling 128.1 innings on the mound with 145 strikeouts.
Capacete played his final two collegiate seasons with the Lancers after transferring from crosstown showdown rival, UC Riverside. During those two seasons, Capacete made 18 appearances with a 3.48 ERA. Like New, Capacete's time with the Lancers was cut short due to injury, as he logged just 33.2 innings of work in his time with CBU.
The right-hander made 13 appearances for the Lancers in 2026, totaling 27.0 innings on the mound. Opponents batted .235 against Capacete last season, while the righty finished the year with 34 strikeouts. He ended his collegiate career with 97 punchouts across 96.2 innings.
With two picks in the 2026 MLB Draft, the Lancers have now seen a player be selected in 15 of the last 16 years. The only exception was in 2020 when the draft was cut to five rounds following the COVID-19 pandemic. During the 2020 draft, CBU did see one of its recruits get drafted with the 158th overall pick.
