OVERLAND PARK, KS --- Sophomore Chris Ramirez, the 2026 WAC Player of the Year, has been named a finalist for the Brooks Wallace Award. The award, issued by the College Baseball Hall of Fame, recognizes the best shortstop in Division I baseball.
Ramirez is one of five shortstops named a finalist for the award. He is joined by Dylan Carey (Nebraska), Roch Cholowsky (UCLA), Carson Kerce (Georgia Tech), and Jake Schaffner (North Carolina). Ramirez is the only underclassman in the group.
The Brooks Wallace Award is named in honor of former Texas Tech shortstop Brooks Wallace, who played for Texas Tech from 1977 to 1980. Wallace died of leukemia at the age of 27. Finalists for the award were chosen based on their combined offensive and defensive performances.
The 2026 season was a record-breaking campaign for Ramirez. The sophomore closed out the season with 98 hits, the most by any player in CBU baseball history. He also became the third player in program history to be named the WAC Player of the Year.
He added another award, WAC Defensive Player of the Year, marking back-to-back seasons for Ramirez to be tabbed as the conference's best defensive player.
Ramirez led the Lancers with a .389 average across 59 games this season. He scored a team-high 71 runs, led the team with 22 doubles, and added seven home runs and 42 RBI. He also stole a team-high 21 bases.
The winner of the Brooks Wallace Award will be announced at a press conference on Saturday, June 13, from Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, NE. The press conference is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. (PST).
