Lancers Remain Unbeaten With 1-0 Win, Secure Sixth Straight Clean Sheet

RIVERSIDE – The Lancers remain unbeaten and secured their sixth straight clean sheet with a 1-0 win over San Diego Thursday night, with senior Anja Jestrovic scoring the lone goal of the night.

With the win, CBU also currently remains the last Division I women's soccer team in the country that has not allowed a goal.

In a tightly contested first half, the Lancers and Toreros went back and forth as both teams battled for possession. Freshman Maya Yoshimura made her first start after dazzling in her last game with a brace, helping lead the CBU attack alongside senior forward Tyra King. Both Yoshimura and King got shots off early, but San Diego goalkeeper Chloe Walls was able to make the saves.

San Diego created opportunities of its own, putting pressure on the Lancer defense with several crosses and shots. Graduate goalkeeper Mikayla O'Brien made two saves in the first half to keep the Toreros off the scoreboard, while the Lancer defense helped clear away another dangerous chance inside the box.

The two teams continued to battle throughout the half, with neither side gaining much separation. Just when it looked like the teams would enter halftime tied at 0-0, King sent a cross into the box in the 42nd minute. Jestrovic drove the ball toward goal, and after a deflection off the San Diego goalkeeper, the ball found the back of the net to give the Lancers a 1-0 lead.

The goal marked Jestrovic's second of the season and King's first assist of the year.

CBU entered halftime with a 7-3 advantage in shots, while San Diego held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.

After halftime, the Lancers continued to pressure the Toreros as both teams battled for control. CBU nearly doubled its lead in the 54th minute when King found the back of the net following a sequence involving Yoshimura and freshman Mikayla Benavidez, but the goal was ruled offside and the Lancers remained ahead 1-0.

Shortly after, sophomore Mikaela Burchell was issued her first yellow card of the season while fighting for possession.

The Lancers continued to create chances throughout the second half, finishing with 10 shots after the break. San Diego managed just two second-half shots as CBU's defense continued to keep the Toreros off the scoreboard.

"This is a good team win! Very proud of the team's grit and performance tonight," said head coach Kristen St. Clair. "We knew this would be a challenging game and wanted to finish non-conference play well, prior to the start of Big West play next week. I was very impressed with our team's ability to read the game and control the match as we gained more and more possession. Tyra played a great ball to Anja for the game-winner. I thought we could have had a few more but just narrowly missed.
Tyra, Bexy, Taylor and Mikayla O'Brien all came up big for us tonight. We'll enjoy this win tonight and begin preparing for Big West play tomorrow."

CBU finished the night with a 17-5 advantage in shots and put eight shots on goal compared to San Diego's two. O'Brien recorded two saves to earn her sixth straight shutout.

The Lancers finish nonconference play unbeaten for the third time in program history and will look to continue their success as they begin Big West play next week. CBU travels to San Luis Obispo to face Cal Poly on Wednesday, Sept. 23.
