Justin Hixson joined California Baptist University as a volunteer assistant in August 2018. He had spent the previous three seasons as a pitching coach at Biola University after an accomplished playing career at CBU from 1998-2000.
In three years with Hixson on the staff, the Lancers have gone 82-44 and won a share of the 2019 and 2021 Western Athletic Conference titles. CBU has produced four WAC Pitchers of the Week and six all-conference pitchers in two seasons with Hixson on staff, including 2019 WAC Pitcher of the Year Logan Rinehart.
Biola’s pitching staff enjoyed its best season in three years in Hixson’s first full season in 2015. In 2016, one of the Eagles pitcher Hixson coach signed a professional contract, marking the first time in five years a Biola pitcher went pro. The Eagles' staff combined to throw the most shutouts in three years and helped lead the Eagles to their first conference tournament championship game.
Hixson helped Biola crack the top-25 rankings and to a 35-18 overall record in 2017. The Eagles pitching was key to the success. Jimmy Gallarda earned the team’s first all-conference award for a pitcher since 2013.
In 2018, Biola went 34-22 in its first season in NCAA Division II and the Pacific West Conference. He personally oversaw the development of senior Micah Beyer, who earned second-team honors in the PacWest.
Prior to Biola, Hixson's coaching experience included time as a pitching coach for Global Baseball in 2011. He served as a professional pitching instructor.
Hixson earned a bachelors in mass communications as Cal State San Bernardino in 2005 and then added a master’s in sports management from Long Beach State in 2011. He married his wife, Mindy, on Aug. 6, 2006. Together they have two daughters, Payton and Sawyer
