RIVERSIDE, Calif. (Saturday, April 2, 2005) – A walk-off home run by junior LF Tami Trujillo in game two gave the #5 California Baptist University softball team a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader split with #7 Point Loma Nazarene, 0-1 and 2-0 in Riverside Saturday afternoon.
CBU (30-3, 9-1 GSAC) dropped a one-run game to the Sea Lions (30-5, 6-3 GSAC) in the first end of the doubleheader, snapping its winning streak at 23 games. During the streak, which took up the entire month of March, the Lancers out-scored opponents by more than 100 runs (123-17). CBU pitching also tossed 14 shutouts during the run.
Trujillo (Newcastle, CA/Del Oro HS/Sierra CC) had four hits, including the game-winner, to lead the team while senior CF Jenny Stolle (Modesto, CA/Modesto HS) had three hits in game one. Senior SS Kristen Hernandez (Riverside, CA/La Sierra HS/UC Riverside) and freshman RF Chantel Millard (Riverside, CA/Poly HS) each had a pair of hits for the Lancers.
Sophomore RF Lacy Newman had an RBI double in game one to plate junior SS Katie McColeman, scoring the game’s only run. After the Lancers stranded a Point Loma runner who had led off the top of the fifth inning with a triple, the Sea Lions escaped jams in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, leaving the final score at 1-0.
Sophomore RHP KC Robertson picked up the game-one win for Point Loma after throwing 5 1/3 shutout innings, where she allowed eight hits, walked two and struck out one batter to improve to 14-3. McColemanearned her third save of the season after she got the Sea Lions out of the sixth inning and tossed a scoreless seventh.
Senior RHP Amanda Xavier (Modesto, CA/Peter Johansen HS) took the loss for CBU after throwing seven innings, allowing one earned run on eight hits while striking out seven and walking four, dropping her record to 13-3.
CBU stranded six runners in scoring position during the first eight frames, including three runners on third base before Trujillo’s two-out ninth-inning go-homer ended game two. The blast plated sophomore 2B Jamie Lowe (Norco, CA/Norco HS), who started the frame on second base and was moved to third on a bunt by senior C Angella Funk (Westlake, CA/Westlake HS).
Sophomore RHP Candice Thomas (Barstow, CA/Barstow HS) threw her eighth complete-game shutout of the season, going nine innings where she allowed just three hits and issued one free pass while notching one strikeout. McColeman (11-1) went 8 2/3 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits while walking two and striking out seven, but took the loss for Point Loma.
The Lancers next travel to La Mirada Tuesday (April 5) for a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader versus Biola starting at 2 p.m.
