RIVERSIDE --- The brooms are out in Riverside, as California Baptist pulled off a three-game sweep of Utah Valley behind Saturday's 6-3 win. A five-run third inning did the damage for the Lancers, as they enter the third week of conference action with a 5-1 WAC record.
Sophomore Madalyn Martin got the starting nod on Saturday, as head coach Brandon Telesco gave Miranda De Nava a much-earned day of rest. De Nava carried the load on Friday with 18.0 IP and over 200 pitches thrown across the two games.
Martin earned her fourth victory of the season as she logged four innings in which she allowed two runs on four hits. Emily Darwin tossed the final three frames in relief, as she earned her fourth save of the season. Darwin allowed one run on one hit.
The Lancers were first on the board on Saturday as Makayla Medellin drove in Kenzie Farrier-Pilon with a sacrifice fly. UVU got the run back in the second on an RBI single, but as the game progressed to the third, CBU's bats came to life.
Farrier-Pilon started the rally with an RBI double into the left-centerfield gap, plating Stevie Robison. Medellin then added to the rally with a two-run single to push the score to 4-1. A fielder's choice pushed across CBU's fourth run of the inning, and then Darwin, who started the game as the DP, recorded her first RBI of the season on a sacrifice fly.
Utah Valley got runs in the fourth and fifth but could not continue the rally as the Lancers held on for the win.
Farrier-Pilon ended the win 2-for-4 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored. Malachy Russell-Millen went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Medellin drove in three runs.
CBU improves to 27-12 with the series sweep. The Lancers, who won their WAC opening series last weekend against Southern Utah, are now 5-1 in conference action.
The Lancers will be back in action on Tuesday when CSUN visits John C. Funk for a non-conference game. WAC action resumes next weekend when Utah Tech comes to Riverside for a three-game series.
