RIVERSIDE --- Sophomore Miranda De Nava is the ironman of the CBU Softball team, as she was asked to pull the wagon on Friday's series-opening doubleheader against Utah Valley. Starting with a shutout in game one, extra innings were then needed in game two, as De Nava went the distance, and her team rewarded her with a sweep.
The right-hander logged 18 innings in the circle, compiling 239 pitches, over 75 percent being strikes. She struck out 16 Wolverines, as her record jumped to 12-5.
De Nava was untouchable in game one. The sophomore tossed a complete game shutout in which she allowed only two hits, one coming in the top of the seventh. Her offense aided her with a pair of runs in the first inning when an Ashlee Annett bunt scored Kenzie Farrier-Pilon from third, and then the two allowed Makayla Medellin to score from second.
Annett gave her side a third run in the sixth when her sacrifice fly pushed across Matti Severns. Annett went 2-for-2 with three RBI in game one.
When it came time to turn in lineup cards for game two, the decision had been made by head coach Brandon Telesco that CBU was going to ride the hot hand and return De Nava to the circle. The decision paid off as De Nava showed no signs of rust, following up her 93-pitch outing in game one with 146 pitches in game two.
Sydney Peterson gave the Lancers their first run of game two, a sacrifice fly in the second to plate Annett. Medellin then added the big blast in the third when she launched her tenth home run over the right-centerfield fence.
After 11 innings of zeroes on the board, Utah Valley finally scored in the fourth when an error pushed across a run. The Wolverines leveled the game in the fifth on an RBI single. Deadlocked at two, the game pushed to extra innings.
It was a stalemate in extras, as three extra frames saw no runs cross home, sending the game to the 11th. Then a lucky break, or bounce, set up the Lancers. Jordyn Madrigal hit one off the third base bag that allowed her to reach scoring position. Peterson then hit a pop-up down the right field line that was dropped, sending Madrigal home and erupting the CBU dugout onto the field in celebration.
Medellin led the Lancers with two of their eight hits in the extra-inning victory.
De Nava's final line in game two saw her log 11 innings in which she allowed two runs (one earned) on eight hits with no walks and nine strikeouts. Of the 146 pitches she threw, only 28 were called balls.
The Lancers are now 4-0 in extra innings, with three of the wins ending in walk-off fashion at John C. Funk Stadium.
CBU will wrap up the series on Saturday with a single game against the Wolverines. Saturday's action is scheduled for noon.
