CBU’S TRUJILLO, THOMAS NAMED PLAYER, PITCHER OF THE YEAR; FOUR OTHERS NAMED TO ALL-GSAC TEAM
RIVERSIDE, Calif. (Friday, May 6, 2005) – After a record-setting regular season for the California Baptist University softball team, sophomore RHP Candice Thomas was named the Golden State Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year, while junior LF Tami Trujillo was selected as the GSAC Player of the Year, it was announced this week.
Joining Thomas (Barstow, CA/Barstow HS) and Trujillo (Newcastle, CA/Del Oro HS/Sierra CC) on the all-conference team are senior C Angella Funk (Westlake, CA/Westlake HS), senior SS Kristen Hernandez (Riverside, CA/La Sierra HS/UC Riverside), senior CF Jenny Stolle (Modesto, CA/Modesto HS), and senior RHP Amanda Xavier (Modesto, CA/Peter Johansen HS).
It was the second year in a row that Thomas, Hernandez, and Xavier were named to the team. Funk, Stolle, and Trujillo each garnered the award for the first time in their respective careers. Thomas, Trujillo, and Funk had each earned a GSAC weekly honor throughout the season.
Thomas went 87 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run to start the season, and ended the regular season as CBU’s single-season record holder with 25 wins. Thomas (25-1) currently holds a 0.34 ERA on the season, which is also on pace to be a school record. She threw 13 shutouts during the season.
Trujillo finished the regular season hitting .414, and has led the team with seven home runs and 17 doubles while knocking in 26 runs. She’s slugging a team-high .678, and has stolen 11 bases while only getting thrown out four times.
Hernandez is leading the team with a .442 average, and posted 13 doubles, five homers, and a .624 slugging percentage. Funk is hitting .336 with nine doubles and home run, and has thrown out 58 percent of would-be basestealers (11-for-19).
Stolle, the team’s leadoff hitter, is batting .365, with eight stolen bases and 27 runs scored, while Xavier posted a 19-4 record, with a 1.18 ERA in 148 innings on the regular season for the Lancers.
The #4-ranked CBU softball team (44-5), which earned its first-ever sole possession of a GSAC championship, will host the NAIA Region II Tournament May 10-12. #6 Point Loma Nazarene, #14 Concordia, and #20 Biola are the other school competing in the tournament. The winner gets an automatic berth to the NAIA National Tournament May 20-25 in Decatur, Ala.
