Friday Split Sets Up a Winner-Take-All Saturday

RIVERSIDE --- The Lancers entered Friday with a chance to claim the first Western Athletic Conference (WAC) championship in program history. Needing two wins this weekend to be the outright regular season champions, the Lancers settled for a split with Tarleton State, setting up a winner-take-all game on Saturday.
CBU's one victory does, however, secure the Lancers at least a share of the WAC title. It also eliminates Tarleton State from becoming outright champions. The Texans needed to sweep the series to clinch an outright championship.
Pitching was on display Friday evening, as the Lancers allowed only one run (unearned) across 14 innings. Right-hander Miranda De Nava threw game one, a complete game shutout, in which she struck out nine batters. None was bigger than her fourth of the game, which surpassed the CBU Division I era record for strikeouts in a season.
CBU pushed across its first two runs in odd fashion, starting with an infield popup that went untouched, allowing Kenzie Farrier-Pilon to reach base and drive in Matti Severns. Farrier-Pilon later scored on a wild pitch that hit off the home plate umpire's mask. A 20-minute delay then followed as the umpires needed to change positions and gear.
Makayla Medellin added to the scoring in the fifth when she launched a no-doubt home run to deep center field. The three-run shot made it a 5-0 game. Kimberly Westover added the final two RBI of the 7-0 win on a pinch-hit single.
The win set up a chance for the Lancers to celebrate on their home field after game two, as a Friday sweep would make the Lancers champions.
Emily Darwin got the ball for game two and lasted 2.1 innings before head coach Brandon Telesco went back to De Nava. Darwin allowed the only run of the game on an error in the top of the second. She recorded three strikeouts and allowed two hits.
De Nava also allowed only two hits in game two across 4.2 scoreless innings in relief.
The Lancers put up one final fight in the seventh inning, starting with Sydney Peterson, who reached base for the third time in the game. Malachy Russell-Millen then walked, placing the winning run on base, but the rally would end there as Tarleton held on for the 1-0 win.
CBU will look to clinch the outright championship on Saturday when the regular season concludes with a 2 p.m. start. Should Tarleton State win, the Lancers and Texans will be co-champions of the regular season, while Tarleton will claim the one seed next week.
Saturday's game will be followed by Senior Day, as four seniors will be honored at John C. Funk Stadium.
