RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Sometimes, it's pretty convenient to have a good 6-on-5 game.
The Lancers flexed their advantage muscle Friday afternoon, as Harvard provided them with 11 chances at the 6-on-5. California Baptist, which improves to 20-7, found the net in 8 of the 11 opportunites, as the team held the Crimson to just one goal in the second half for a, 9-4 win.
Today's victory marks the first time since 2002 that the Lancers have reached the 20-win plateau as the Crimson falls to 7-8-1 on the season. CBU is now 4-2 all-time versus Ivy League programs.
"It's great to have a decisive win against a team like Harvard today," said California Baptist head coach Rick Rowland. "We started the game not marking properly on defense, but as the game picked up, so did our defensive effort. To outscore them 8-2 to close out the game was huge for us, and our 6-on-5 game absolutely carried us this afternoon."
The Lancers were the first to get on the scoreboard, as Chris Morgan put the home team up on the scoreboard with 1:30 left in the first period. However, the Crimson took the lead with a goal each by Michael Garcia and Egan Atkinson to end the first quarter.
Harvard stretched the lead to 2, at 3-1, with a David Tune goal, but it was all Lancers from that point on. Mike Looy netted his first of 3 goals with just 34 ticks on the second-quarter clock, and Jon Miller slammed the door, keeping the Crimson scoreless in the third period while Looy and Ryan Steiger supported him with 2 goals each in a decisive third quarter.
Miller, who made 9 saves on the afternoon, had some more help in the fourth quarter, as goals from Charlie Weaver, Josh Harris and Morgan countered Tune's second goal of the contest for Harvard.
