Fisiikava nailed 6 shots from beyond the arc and also grabbed 3 steals to lead the team. She was named to the all-tournament team, along with Nicole Davis, who finished with 17 points and was named the tournament MVP. The Lancers improve to 2-0 with the win.
“Jessica shot the ball very will tonight and last night as well,” said California Baptist head coach Steve Sain. “She had some good looks all night and did what we expect from her with those opportunities.”
“Nicole was really steady both nights, and kept the tempo going as well,” he said.
Although the Lancers clinched the tournament with the victory, they were called for a grand total of 27 fouls on the night. California Baptist, which had just 17 fouls called in its favor, did capitalize on 29 Beacon turnovers.
“Sometimes it's not the prettiest thing to win a basketball game,” said Sain. “You're going to have nights like that, especially early in the season, and you just have to find a way to get it done in those situations.”
The Beacons came within 6 points with just 1:53 left to play, as Samantha Franklin hit a jumper and later sunk one of 2 free throws to cap off an 11-4 run and make the score 73-67.
In the first half, Northwest hit only 5 of its first 10 free-throw attempts, but converted on 9 of its next 10 opportunities from the charity stripe. Meanwhile, the Lancers were whistled for 17 fouls to open the night.
California Baptist, which ended the half on a 3:25 scoring drought, had built up an early 15-2 advantage following a 3-pointer from Fisiikava, and the Lancers led, 28-17, before Northwest found its touch from the line.
A trio of Lancers had already collected 3 fouls, but California Baptist was still up by a 36-31 margin heading into the break.
