COSTA MESA, Calif. --- California Baptist played under the lights for the first time this year, and it was the lights that made the difference.
Christy Horning's goal off a rebound from a ball lost in the lights proved to be the difference Tuesday night as the NAIA's No. 18-ranked Vanguard staved off California Baptist, 1-0, for a GSAC win.
The loss drops the Lancers to 10-4 overall, 5-2 (15 points) GSAC, while the Lions improve to 8-3-3, 3-2-2 (11 points). Despite the loss, CBU maintains its hold on third place, trailing second place Concordia and Westmont by just one point. Both Concordia and Westmont still have its byes coming.
Playing their first and only night game of the season, the Lancers put together one of their best offensive performances in every area but the most crucial?finishing. CBU built up an onslaught of attacks and out-shot Vanguard, 16-8, including an 11-4 margin in the second half, but couldn't find the back of the net.
In the 20th minute, Kristin Rice lifted a shot from about 40 yards out that got caught up in the lights. CBU keeper Emily Evanson lost the ball and had it deflect off her to a waiting Horning, who promptly placed the rebound into the net for what turned out to be the game's only score.
Evanson ended with six saves, while Vanguard keeper Jillian Foss nabbed five.
