FULLERTON, Calif. --- For all intents and purposes, Tuesday's GSAC women's soccer game between California Baptist University and Hope International didn't need to go the entire 90 minutes. In fact, it really didn't need the final 80 minutes.
All three of the game's goals were scored in the first 10 minutes with the NAIA's No. 7-ranked Lancers scoring two of them in getting a 2-1 road win over the Royals.
The win is the Lancers' fourth in a row as they improve to 9-2 overall, 3-0 (9 points) GSAC. It is the second straight season the Lancers have started the conference slate with three straight wins.
The Royals fall to 8-2-2, 1-2-1 (4 points).
“It wasn't the prettiest soccer we've played this year, but the girls battled, fought and grinded out the win,” said CBU head coach Kristen St. Clair. “The conditions were tough day, battling through the heat, and this is a tough place to play. We are continuing to improve each game, getting better and better.”
It took all of 51 seconds for CBU to strike. The Lancers were awarded a free kick from 35 yards out. Jenna Oltmanns took the kick, sent it into the box, and Kylee Nicassio converted her fifth goal of the season and fourth in the past three games.
Less than three full minutes later, Harmony Pruett, the second leading scorer in the conference, got the equalizer when she controlled a cross, dribbled into the box and tucked away her 13th goal of the season.
With the game tied, the Lancers were awarded another free kick. Fabiola da Silva took the kick from just outside the left side of the box. Her bending ball curled over the wall and banged off the inside post and into the net at the 9:25 mark for her second goal of the year.
The Lancers out-shot the Royals, 11-7. Emily Evanson made just one save as the Royals had just two shots on frame.
