La JOLLA, Calif. ? California Baptist dropped a pair of games at the US San Diego Triton Invitational falling 12-3 to No. 12 Loyola-Marymount and 9-8 to Indiana. Cydney Owen scored five of the Lancers (3-3) 11 goals on the day.
Owen scored a pair of goals in the opener and then recorded a hat trick in opening quarter against Indiana.
In the opener, Corrie Stuursma scored the only goal in the first quarter as the Lancers trailed 3-1. Owen cut it to 3-2, before LMU went on a 4-0 run to close out the half to take a 7-2 lead. LMU scored three straight goals in the third, running their streak to seven straight, before Owen scored her second goal of the day.
In the nightcap, the Lancers fell behind early 1-0 before Owen ripped back-to-back goals less than a minute apart to give CBU a 2-1 lead. Stuursma made it 3-1 with 4:06 left in the first, before the Hoosiers answered to make it 3-2. Owen completed the hat trick with 2:13 left in the quarter to give the Lancers a 4-2 lead after the first.
Krista Chacon made it 5-2 when she found the back of the net, but IU answered again with 2:37 left on a goal by Lauren Wyckoff, to help Indiana make it a 5-3 score at intermission.
The Hoosiers cut it to 5-4 early in the third, but Ashleigh Wheeler put the Lancers back on top at 6-4 with 4:37 left in the quarter. IU capped the third with back-to-back goals to tie the game heading into the final quarter.
Indiana scored just 20 second into the fourth and added another with 3:34 to play to take an 8-6 lead. Chacon scored her second goal of the game with 2:14 left to bring CBU within one, but IU answered again with 1:09 left to put CBU away. Stuursma scored with 49 seconds left making it 9-8, but the Lancers fell just short.
CBU will take on Brown tomorrow at 9:15 a.m. and will either play at 1 p.m., if they lose, and 2:15 p.m., if they win.
