RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- On a day when it struggled to find the back of the net, the NAIA's No. 7-ranked California Baptist University turned to a pair of rookies.
Amanda Lammers and Diana Ravenda both scored, once in each half, to lead the Lancers to a 2-0 win over visiting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Saturday morning.
The win is the Lancers' fourth straight as they improve to 5-1 on the season. The Athenas drop to 0-3. Today's game was added late Thursday evening after the Athenas had a scheduled weekend trip to Texas cancelled due to the potential impact of Hurricane Ike.
It took them more than 30 minutes to get going. The Athenas had six shots on goal, all in the first 23 minutes of the game, but CBU keeper Emily Evanson came up big in the first minute to set the tone.
The Athenas were awarded a penalty kick just 39 seconds into the match when the Lancers were called for a hand ball in the box. Evanson, though, saved Nicole Sady-Kennedy's attempt, one of her six saves of the day, as she went on to post her first shutout of the season, the team's fourth.
“It took us a little while to get going, but we finally found our rhythm and got going,” said CBU head coach Kristen St. Clair. “Emily came up with a big save early. After we sorted some things out, we rolled up our sleeves, went to work and took over the game. It was another game where we created some dangerous opportunities and their keeper made some great saves. We're getting better every game, and that is good.”
The Lancers out-shot CMS, 24-9. It was the fourth straight game CBU had at least 20 shots. Yet, the Lancers struggled to find the back of the net, so they turned to a pair of freshmen substitutes.
In the 36th minute, Lammers scored her second goal in as many games when she ran onto a perfect set-up from Adriana Ramirez in the middle of the area. Lammers took a touch and tucked away what turned out to be the game-winner.
Then, in the second half, and clinging to a tenuous 1-0 lead, Ravenda received a perfect through ball from Fabiola da Silva and converted her first collegiate goal in the 89th minute to ice the game.
“Our freshmen are really coming into their own,” said St. Clair. “I've been pleased with their performances. They are adjusting and contributing on every level more and more.”
Half of the Lancers' 24 shots were on frame. Carla Friedman-Gerlicz made 10 saves, including six in the second half.
