RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? One stat tells the story. California Baptist gave up 22 second-chance points as the Lancers lost their first home game of the year and their first since Feb. 12 of last year.
The Lancers (10-5, 2-3 GSAC) had won eight straight home games before the loss to the Eagles (10-3, 3-2 GSAC). It was also the first time since 2006 that Concordia upended CBU.
Concordia out rebounded CBU 53-27, including 24 offensive rebounds with 10 of those offensive boards coming from Cheyenne Wallace. She finished with 16 total rebounds. No Lancer had over six rebounds.
Heather Couzens led California Baptist with 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting. Jeanine Deno added 17 and Nicole Davis scored 14. CBU shot 46.2 percent from 3-point range, hit 84.2 percent from the charity stripe and forced 20 turnovers, but that was not enough to overcome the difference on the boards.
The Lancers never trailed by more than five in the first half. Trailing 26-21, CBU used a late 16-2 second half run to take a 37-28 lead. Concordia cut it to 37-30 with 1:27 left in the half, but Deno and Couzens hit consecutive buckets to put CBU up 41-30 at intermission.
California Baptist led 58-52 before 7-1 run by the Eagles tied it at 59. Concordia took their first lead since the 6:16 mark in the first half on a pair of free throw from Nicole Fu. Brenna Hahn tied it at 61 with a jumper, but Fu answered right back with a layup to give the Eagles the lead for good.
After not scoring a single point in the first half, Fu scored 20 second half points going 7-for-13 after intermission.
The Lancers now go on the road as they travel to Fullerton, Calif., to take on Hope International in a 5:30 p.m. GSAC contest.
