RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? California Baptist had nine different scorers as the Lancers opened the 2009 season with an 18-7 win over Cal State San Bernardino. Kylie Chevalier and Rachel Esau each scored four goals while Chevalier recorded a hat trick in the second quarter alone.
“This is what I wanted to see out of this team,” said CBU head coach Jacob Medina. “I wanted to see us come out and play some tight defense and get the offense moving. You're never quite sure what you have until you start playing and getting up to game speed. We also saw some things that we need to fix.”
CBU blew open the game with a 6-2 second quarter and outscored the Coyotes 8-4 in the second half.
Chelsea Gentry and Ashleigh Rood also scored a pair of goals while Lauren Burnett, Melissa Shepardson, Rylee Scheid and Sarah Hunter all scored single goals.
Freshman Camryn Rogers also had a grand debut in the net, grabbing six saves.
“I don't know if you ever expect a game to be that easy scoring wise,” said Medina. “We did a nice job as a team of committing to transition. We didn't force a whole lot, so it was good to see that patience in the pool. It's a brand new lineup up of girls and typically you see the young ones rush things.”
Rood scored the first goal of the year less than a minute in, but CSUSB answered with 6:04 left in the first. Chevalier and Easu answered back with a goal each to give CBU a 3-1 lead at the end of the first.
Rood and Chevalier put the finishing touches on a 4-0 run that started at the end of the first to give the Lancers a 5-1 lead. After the Coyotes cut it to 5-2, CBU outscored the Coyotes 4-1 in the final five minutes of the half. It was more of the same in the second half as the Lancers scored the first four goals of the third and outscored the Coyotes 4-1 in the first six minutes of the fourth.
California Baptist will have a pair of top 20 match ups next week when it hosts No. 14 Cal State Northridge and No. 18 Cal State Bakersfield, Jan. 31.
