AZUSA, Calif. --- Azusa Pacific's dominance of California Baptist University continued Saturday as the NAIA's No. 4-ranked Cougars rallied for a 2-1 win over the No. 3 Lancers. It was the Cougars' fifth straight win over the Lancers and 30th in 34 meetings all-time.
It was also their 19th win in 21 games at home over the Lancers.
After starting the season 10-0-1, including 4-0-1 against ranked teams, the Lancers have now lost three of their past four overall and two straight to ranked teams and drop to 11-3-1 overall, 4-3-0 (12 points) GSAC. They have three games remaining, two of them against the bottom two teams in the conference.
The Cougars improve to 11-2-0, 7-0-0 (21 points) and are squarely in the driver's seat for their fifth straight GSAC title.
“We were solid in our performance and execution today, and it's unfortunate that we didn't get the result,” said CBU Head Coach Kristen St. Clair. “I was very proud of our effort today. We played well enough to win. It's tough when you play well like we did and give the effort like we did and don't get the result. It was a good battle between two really good teams.”
After the Lancers controlled the first 45 minutes and carried a 1-0 lead into the break, the Cougars seemingly flipped the switch and came out firing in the second half. All told the Cougars out-shot the Lancers, 21-12, but held a commanding 15-5 advantage in the final 45, scoring twice.
Fabiola Zanella da Silva put the Lancers on the board with a penalty kick in the 24th minute. Kitra Walters drew a foul in the area when she was taken down while moving toward a cross from Amanda Lammers. da Silva easily beat Michelle Wieland, who had no chance.
The Cougars got the equalizer in the 52nd minute when Natalie Sun ended a round of pinball in the area. Theresa Broad ran onto a ball on the end line and Emily Evanson saved the initial shot. From there, the Lancers couldn't clear the ball, nor could the Cougars find the net, until finally Sun hammered the bouncing ball.
CBU nearly went back ahead 13 minutes later. Lizzy Bendrick picked up a loose ball in the area but her shot hit the crossbar in the 65th minute.
Sun's goal breathed life into the Cougars, who began getting forward more often. With 15 minutes remaining and Sun working as the lead blocker taking down a Lancer defender, Broad found a deflected ball at her feet. She ripped a shot to the far post from nine yards out for what turned out to be the game-winner.
Evanson finished with nine saves, seven of them coming in the second half. Broad nearly put the game away in the 89th minute, but Jenna Oltmanns saved a sure goal off the line. The Lancers were never able to get the equalizer.
