RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- It was Senior Day in Riverside, but a sophomore took center stage.
Amanda Lammers had a hat trick, and the NAIA's No. 8-ranked California Baptist University scored three unanswered goals all in the second half in defeating No. 21 Concordia, 4-1, on a windy Saturday afternoon in Riverside.
The win clinches second place in the GSAC for the Lancers, who improve to 14-3-1 overall, 7-3-0 (21 points) GSAC and will be the second-seed in the GSAC Tournament, which begins Tuesday. The Lancers will host Fresno Pacific.
Concordia falls to 8-5-3, 5-4-1 (16 points).
The Lancers, who can have dropped to fifth with a loss, have won three in a row.
“Every game is big at this point in the season,” said CBU Head Coach Kristen St. Clair. “You hope to better at the end of the year than you are at the start of the year, and we are going in the right direction at the right time. This is a tremendous league, the best in the country, so to finish second is a pretty big accomplishment.”
Lammers, who also assisted on the other CBU goals, has 11 points the past three games and recorded her first career hat trick. After the teams played a scoreless first half, combining for just eight shots, they came out swinging in the second scoring all five goals in a 32 minute span.
Lammers got things started when she took a through ball to the right side in the 50th minute from Lizzy Bendrick and slipped it past Bekah Garvin to give the Lancers a 1-0 lead.
That lead was short-lived, however, as just 49 seconds later, Sasha Hudson brought the Eagles level with a wind-aided goal as she put home a long ball that got caught up in the wind and wreaked havoc on Lancer keeper Emily Evanson.
Six minutes after Concordia got the equalizer, Lammers got on the end of a Jacquelyn Witz cross to give the Lancers a 2-1 lead in the 56th minute. Lammers then set-up Britney Quiroz, who scored her fifth goal of the season in the 79th minute. Three minutes later, Lammers completed the hat trick with an unassisted tally, breaking past the Eagle defense to ice the game.
“Amanda is coming back from an injury and is gaining more and more confidence every day,” said St. Clair. “She is a tremendous asset and a dangerous player, especially in the attack. She had a great performance today when we needed it most.”
CBU out-shot Concordia, 16-7, including 11-4 in the second half.
