RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Vanguard's Amanda Couch scored the golden goal just 52 seconds into the second overtime to lift the NAIA's No. 8-ranked Lions to a 2-1 win over No. 7 California Baptist University Friday in the GSAC Tournament Semifinals. It is the Lancers' second straight semifinal loss.
The loss drops the Lancers to 15-4-1 overall, leaving them one win short of tying a program-record for wins in a season, which they set last year. They also must now sit and wait to learn of their national tournament fate to see if they earn one of the six or seven at large berths to their second straight tournament. The field will be announced Nov. 15.
Vanguard improves to 12-1-5, snapping a string of four straight ties. It advances to the GSAC Tournament Finals Friday and will host Point Loma Nazarene, which upset Azusa Pacific on penalty kicks in the other semifinal.
With penalty kicks looming, the Lions' Lauren Evans played a long ball into the box. Couch jumped and headed it over a charging Emily Evanson and the ball trickled into the net, stunning the Lancers and sending the Lions into a frenzy and into the finals.
“This was an epic battle between two very good teams,” said CBU Head Coach Kristen St. Clair. “At this point in the season only good teams are left. I'm extremely proud of our girls' work rate today. It was an outstanding effort, but it just didn't go our way.”
CBU jumped all over the Lions from the outset and struck first in the fifth minute when Lizzy Bendrick came through with one of her vintage strikes. Bendrick received a ball with her back to the goal, spun over her left shoulder, took touches and hammered a 35-yard strike into the upper corner of the net giving the Lancers the lead.
Thirty minutes later, the Lions got even. After the Lancers cleared a VU corner kick, Kathleen McDonald played a ball back into the area. It got behind the Lancer defense, and Danielle Dintino ran onto it and beat a helpless Evanson to equalize the game at 1-1 in the 35th minute.
“There are ebbs and flows to every game, and this one definitely had them,” said St. Clair. “The players played through them, though. It was a tough and well-played game by both teams. We've faced a lot of adversity this year, and this group has showed courage and maturity to play through it and get to this point, but it just wasn't our day today.”
The Lions out-shot the Lancers, 21-12 on the game and had a 12-6 advantage in the second half alone. However, Evanson made four of her seven saves in the second 45 minutes to keep the game leveled.
CBU out-shot the Vanguard, 3-2, in the first overtime, but the Lions had the only shot of the second overtime. It was the winner.
