IRVINE, Calif. ? California Baptist University looked like the team that most expected to see during the 2008-09 season with an 82-62 win over Concordia, Saturday night.
The Lancers (15-10, 7-8 GSAC) shot a season-high 62.5 percent from 3-point land, going 10-for-16 from beyond the arc. The win breaks a two-game losing streak and moves CBU to 5-3 in road GSAC games.
Jeanine Deno led the way, scoring a game-high 26 points with 18 of those coming off of six 3-pointers to tie a career-high. Deno was also just one point short of tying a career-high and just a rebound short of her second career double-double with a game-high nine boards.
Nicole Davis and Heather Couzens were also in double figures as Davis scored 13 while Couzens had 12. Davis also dished out seven assists, tying a season-high, and grabbed five boards. Couzens was just two rebounds short of a double-double with eight.
Eight different Lancers scored points in the first half as CBU shot a blistering 54.3 percent from the field, including 6-for-7 from 3-point range. After four early lead changes, CBU used a 12-0 run to jump out to a 22-11 lead. The Eagles answered with a 13-6 run to cut it to 28-24 with 7:17 left in the half, but the Lancers closed out the half with a 16-1 run to take a 44-25 lead at intermission. Deno was the only Lancer to hit two baskets in the run as six different Lancers contributed.
The Eagles opened the second half on a 10-2 run, but the Lancers answered with a 20-7 run to take a 66-42 lead 10:50 left to play. Deno had over half of those points in the run, scoring 11. Concordia cut the score to 68-52, but that was as close as the Eagles came. The Lancers took their biggest lead of the game, at 78-53 on a Deno layup.
The Lancers out rebounded Concordia, 45-37, and forced 23 turnovers. CBU's bench more than doubled the scoring from the opposing bench, scoring 50 compared to just 24 from Concordia.
