RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? Early and often was the motto of the day for California Baptist University with a 17-1 blowout over Azusa Pacific on the opening day of the of the 2009 NAIA Women's Water Polo Invitational.
The Lancers (20-18) got four goals each from Chelsea Gentry and Melissa Shepardson and a hat trick from Collette Brown. Gentry added two assists and two steals while Brown chipped in with a pair of assists. Jennifer Grutz and Rylee Scheid each found the back of the net twice while Kylie Chevalier and Rachel Easu each netted a single goal.
Camryn Rogers and Kristen Post combined for 11 saves with Post notching a game-high six.
The Lancers scored the first three goals of the game before Azusa got on the board with 2:01 left in the first. It was all CBU from there. The Lancers scored 14 straight goals with six in the second, five in the third and three in the fourth all while holding the Cougars scoreless in the final three quarters.
The Lancers were 2-for-3 on 6-on-5 attempts and held APU to just 1-for-5.
