KANSAS CITY, Mo. ? For the third straight year California Baptist University will enter the NAIA Softball National Championship as the No. 1 seed. The Lancers (54-5) will start their sixth straight national tournament May 14 with pool play that will run through May 16. If CBU can get out of pool play they will play in an eight-team double elimination tournament May 18-20.
The Lancers open pool play May 14 at 9 a.m. (CST) against Hastings before taking on Park, Friday, at 11:30 a.m. (CST). CBU will close pool play Saturday at 1 p.m. (CST) against No. 22 Friends.
No. 2 and defending national champion Lubbock Christian is the top seed in Pool B while Dickinson State tops pool C. Concordia is the second seed in Pool C. No. 4 Point Loma Nazarene is the top seed in Pool D and William Carey is the top seed in Pool E. Oklahoma City, St. Gregory's and Bethel (Ind.) round out the top seeds of the final three pools.
The 2009 NAIA National Championship is now comprised of 32 teams instead of 20 and there are eight pools instead of four. That means that the Lancers will now have to win their pool to reach bracket play.
