STEPHENVILLE, TX --- The 2026 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Softball Tournament gets underway on Wednesday, but for the Lancers, their postseason dreams begin on day two. Entering the six-team tournament as the top seed, CBU will look to claim the first conference tournament championship in the program's DI era and extend the season into regionals.
CBU claimed the top seed after winning the WAC regular season championship over the weekend. Needing to win two games against Tarleton State, the Lancers and Texans split the first two games of the series, setting up a winner-take-all game on Senior Day. After Tarleton scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 6-5 lead, the Lancers pulled off the comeback thanks to Victoria Macias' two-run walk-off home run.
The Lancers will play their first tournament game on Thursday at 10 a.m. (CT) from the Tarleton State Softball Complex. Their opponent will be the winner of Wednesday's game between Utah Valley and Southern Utah.
CBU went a combined 5-1 against the two Utah schools during the regular season. The Lancers visited Southern Utah in Cedar City to open the WAC season and took two of three. The Lancers then swept Utah Valley when the Wolverines visited John C. Funk Stadium. Miranda De Nava highlighted the sweep with a combined 18 innings in the circle during the series-opening doubleheader.
De Nava was recognized as the WAC Pitcher of the Year on Tuesday. She was one of eight Lancers to earn WAC recognition.
Kenzie Farrier-Pilon was named the Freshman of the Year. Brandon Telesco was named Coach of the Year. De Nava, Farrier-Pilon, and Makayla Medellin earned First-Team honors. Matti Severns, Malachy Russell-Millen, Ashlee Annett, and Emily Darwin were all named to the Second Team. De Nava also earned All-Defensive Team honors.
Farrier-Pilon leads the Lancers with a .400 batting average. Medellin enters the postseason having already set Division I era records for home runs, RBI, and runs scored.
CBU comes into the postseason hitting .296 as a team and scores 5.5 runs per game. Opponents are hitting .241 against the Lancers while scoring 3.2 runs per game. The Lancers' pitching staff features a 2.93 ERA and strikes out 5.2 batters per game. De Nava has accounted for 164 of those strikeouts, a Division I era record.
With a win on Thursday morning, the Lancers will advance to Friday and play for a spot in the championship round. A loss on Thursday morning sends CBU into an elimination game on Thursday night.
The 2026 WAC Tournament is a double-elimination tournament, with the winner earning the WAC's single automatic qualifier for the NCAA Tournament. Regional sites and participants will be announced on Sunday as part of the NCAA Selection Show.
