LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- California Baptist University needed a lift, so it turned to a familiar left foot.
Two-time All-GSAC Jacquelyn Witz scored her first career hat trick, and the NAIA's No. 8-ranked California Baptist University scored four unanswered goals in an 11-minute span in the second half to come-from-behind and defeat NCAA Division II Cal State L.A., 4-1, in the Lancers' season-opener Tuesday night.
“We got tested tonight, which was good for us,” said CBU Head Coach Kristen St. Clair. “We kept our composure and chipped away. Once we settled in, we displayed some nice skill and began to find our options. Overall, this was a good start for us.”
All five of the game's goals were scored in the game's final 33 minutes. The Golden Eagles struck first when Liz Franco beat Lancer keeper Emily Evanson in a one-on-one situation. Amanda Matthews played a ball over the top of the Lancer defense, leaving Franco alone with only Evanson standing between her and the goal. Franco tucked in the game's first goal in the 58th minute.
It took the Lancers less than seven minutes to answer, though, as Witz scored the first of her three goals in the 65th minute when she cleaned up a rebound off a Joanna Idom shot to equalize the game.
Less than three minutes after that, Witz took a nice pass from Fabiola Zanella da Silva on the left side and rifled a shot over the outstretched arms of CSULA keeper Jessica Gerski to give the Lancers a 2-1 advantage in the 68th minute. That was all the Lancers needed by they weren't done.
In the 74th minute, Idom got into the act when Eva Solis, who was a thorn in the Golden Eagles' side all night, played her a ball from the right side of the box. Idom easily one-timed it past Gerski. Witz then finished the scoring in the 76th minute after Solis played a ball all the way across the box to the left side, setting Witz up for an easy finish to her hat trick.
Witz's three goals tonight gives the junior 24 goals in 43 career games and moves her within one goal of 10th place on the Lancers' career scoring list.
“Jacquelyn came into camp last week in top form and it showed tonight,” said St. Clair. “Also, Eva has been a nice surprise, and that gave us a pretty good tandem on the outside tonight. Our depth gives us plenty of options to work with and when we go to the bench there isn't much, if any, drop off.”
The Lancers out-shot the Golden Eagles, 15-13, and Evanson came up with seven saves.
