Fifth Straight Clean Sheet Leads CBU to a Thursday Night Victory

RIVERSIDE --- Part four of California Baptist's five-match homestand took place Thursday evening, as the Lancers welcomed the Northern Alabama Lions to Riverside. In what's become the norm in a CBU match, the Lancers held their opponents scoreless, again, setting a new program record with the 3-0 win.
The Lancers have pitched five consecutive shutouts to open the 2026 season, holding opponents off the board for 450 minutes of soccer. That mark establishes a new program record for the longest consecutive shutout streak to open a season.
In recording the shutout, the Lancers used three goalkeepers as Mikayla O'Brien, Genevieve Dauphin, and Rebecca Winton all saw time in net. Winton is credited with the victory, her second of the season, having recorded two saves in the second half.
NAU goalkeeper Emily Dorfman finished with seven saves against 11 attempts on frame.
"I'm proud of our team for recognizing and making the appropriate adjustments in the second half to take the game to our opponent," said head coach Kristen St. Clair.
"I thought Ashley Mekitarian, Bexy Sanchez, and Mikaela Benavides did a great job controlling the midfield for us in the second half," added St. Clair. "It was not a good start, but we finished well. All three of our goalkeepers played well, keeping another clean sheet for us tonight."
Video review came into play in Thursday's match, twice, as the center referee went to the replay table on two occasions to review a potential NAU handball in the penalty area. The first review deemed no handball had been committed, but on the second, triggered by a challenge from St. Clair, a foul had indeed been committed, giving the Lancers a penalty.
Anja Jestrovic stepped up for the penalty attempt, her second of the season, and slotted the attempt home with a lower left-side strike, giving the Lancers a 1-0 lead.
Jestrovic's 69th-minute tally was added to in the 81st minute when the Lancers pushed the ball down the field to set up freshman Maya Yoshimura for the first goal of her collegiate career. Jaelynn Hillenbrand initiated the attack with a ball played to Alyse Then, who then found Yoshimura, who ripped off an upper-corner strike from the top of the penalty area.
Six minutes later, Yoshimura found herself in the right place at the right time as she deflected an NAU clearance attempt into the goal for the brace.
"Maya did a great job to beat her defender and the goalkeeper," noted St. Clair on Yoshimura's strike. "The second goal was great ball pressure and pursuit to deflect the ball into the net."
Thursday's victory moves the Lancers to 4-0-1 on the season with one match remaining before the start of CBU's first Big West campaign.
The Lancers will close out their homestand in one week when San Diego visits the CBU Soccer Stadium. The September 17 meeting with the Toreros is slated for 7 p.m.
