RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- The NAIA's No. 1-ranked California Baptist University continued its dominance, scoring two first half goals in a 2-0 Golden State Athletic Conference win over Biola Tuesday afternoon in Riverside.
The shutout is the Lancers' school-record eighth straight as they improve to 9-0-1 overall, moving within one win or tie of tying the school record unbeaten streak of 11. They have held opponents scoreless for 759 consecutive minutes.
Biola suffers its first defeat and falls to 4-1-1, 1-1-0. CBU is now unbeaten in five straight games against Biola (3-0-2).
“There are no easy games in the GSAC, and we wanted to make sure our focus is good, because Biola has historically made a living out of upsetting teams,” said CBU Head Coach Kristen St. Clair. “They are dangerous to play against, and you need to play well for 90 minutes against them. We are working on the consistency of our performance over the entire 90 minutes, and we got a lot of good contributions from a lot of different players today.”
No player had more of an impact than Eva Solis, who for the third time in five games had a goal and an assist.
The Lancers dominated from start to finish, out-shooting the Eagles, 20-2, including a 10-0 margin in the first half when they took control. Biola didn't get off its first shot until the 74th minute.
In the 16th minute, Solis put the finishing touches on a corner kick with her third goal of the season. Joanna Idom played the corner kick into the box. Biola keeper Erin Frushon, who made nine saves in the game, came off her line. However, Kylee Nicassio rose above the crowd and headed the ball towards the goal. With her back turned to the goal, Solis spun around and tucked away the game's first goal.
Then in the 34th minute, Solis and Lizzy Bendrick hooked up with a nice 1-2 combination. Nicassio again won a header near midfield. Her header went to Solis, who carried the ball past a couple of Biola defenders. Her final move put her in position to play a nice through ball across the box to Bendrick, who easily beat Frushon for the insurance goal.
The Lancer defense and midfield did the rest of the work, controlling the majority of the possession and keeping the Eagles away from danger until the 74th minute when CBU keeper Emily Evanson made her only save, albeit an easy one. Biola only got one more shot off, but it was from 25 yards out and not even close to the frame.
Evanson made just the one save for her seventh save of the season, tying her single-season high. It was her 20th career shutout, adding to her school-record total.
