RIIVERSIDE, Calif. — Monique Calvello and Brenna Hahn each scored a game-high 13 points as California Baptist University dropped a Golden State Athletic Conference contest to Hope International, 64-61.
The Lancers (10-6, 3-3 GSAC) lost their second straight game and first to the Royals (6-10, 1-5 GSAC) since the 2006-07 season.
CBU shot just 31.3 percent from the field and hit just three of its 25 attempts from 3-point range. The Royals' bench also out scored the Lancers' 33-16.
Calvello notched her second double-double of the year with 13 points and 12 rebounds while Heather Couzens was just two points and three boards shy of a double-double with eight points and seven rebounds. Elisha Taylor also had eight points and four rebounds.
The Lancers jumped out quickly to a 7-2 lead early in the first half and led 14-9, their biggest leads of the half, until Hope International used a 12-2 run to take a 21-16 lead with 6:50 left in the half. The Lancers answered with a 9-3 run to retake the lead at 25-24 with 3:06 remaining. Both teams traded leads with the Royals taking a 29-27 lead with 53 seconds left in the half, but Hahn hit a layup and a drained a trey with six seconds left to give CBU a 32-29 lead at intermission.
Neither team led by more than four points in the second half. The Royals took a 45-41 lead with 10:29 left to play. Calvello then went on a run of her own to put the Lancers up 48-45. The junior forward hit back-to-back layups to tie the game at 45 before sinking a free throw and a jumper to put CBU up by three with 7:32 to play.
The Lancers didn't lose the lead until Hope's Lindsay Salazar hit three straight free throws to give the Royals a 58-56 lead with 1:33 remaining. Hope pushed it out to a 62-58 lead with 29 seconds left. Couzens then completed a traditional 3-point play to make it 62-61 with 16 seconds, but that was as close as the Lancers came.
CBU now travels to The Master's, Thursday, for a 5 p.m. contest.
