OAKLAND, Calif. --- After a walk in the park last night in its opener, California Baptist University was put to the test Saturday, squeaking out a 71-68 victory over tournament host Holy Names.
The Lancers got key baskets from senior leader Brenna Hahn and newcomer Shanice Billington to cap a comeback from eight points down in the second half.
“The girls showed a ton of heart and resolve to get this victory,” said first-year Head Coach John Marcum. “It wasn't the prettiest win, but we did what we had to do, got some key buckets and escaped with the win. I'm proud of the way we played.”
With the Lancers trailing by three with a little more than a minute to go, Hahn knocked down an open jumper to bring CBU to within a point. After the two teams traded possessions and Holy Names missed two key free throws, CBU got the ball with 30 seconds to play.
Out of a timeout, CBU inbounded the ball and got it to Billington, who came around a screen and cut right to the rim for the go-ahead layup.
CBU would make two free throws in the final seconds to seal the three-point win.
“We drew that play up so Shanice had the option to either kick it out or go to the hole,” said Marcum. “When she came off the screen she had an open lane and just took advantage of it.”
With five minutes to play in the second half, CBU found itself facing an eight point deficit. Justine Chacon and Renetha Burton each hit two free throws to cut the lead to four. V.V. Vasciunaite and Chacon then knocked down clutch 3-pointers to give the Lancers a two point edge with 3:13 to go.
The home team Hawks would battle back to take a three point lead again, before Hahn and Billington's heroics.
Burton had her second-straight monster game, putting up 17 points and 19 rebounds. Hahn also recorded a double-double, leading all scorers with 18 points and posting 10 rebounds.
CBU shot just 39.7 percent from the field and 27.8 percent from beyond the arc. The Lancers also struggled to keep control of the ball, committing 31 turnovers. Still the CBU defense held Holy Names to just 29.1 percent shooting in the win.
“We definitely have to take care of the ball more,” said Marcum. “That's something we can work on. The season is still young and we have to work out some kinks, but overall I'm pleased with the win.”
CBU moves to 2-0 on the season, while Holy Names falls to 0-2. The Lancers continue their early season tournament circuit, traveling to Salt Lake City, Utah, next weekend to play in the Westminster tournament.
