RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- A game that looked as though it was headed down to the wire ended with a bang as No. 1 California Baptist University clinched its seventh straight GSAC title in convincing fashion on a walk-off home run by Ashley Boyd.
Boyd's sixth inning drive to centerfield was her third homer of the day and put CBU up 11-3, capping a sweep of No. 5 Point Loma Nazarene. The two wins sealed first place in the conference for the Lancers with six regular season games left to play. CBU won the early game, 3-0.
“It was nice to clinch the conference title at home and against Point Loma,” said Head Coach Mike Smith. “They have been our rivals and to finish it off with a win against them is great. On Saturday, when I told the girls they could clinch against Point Loma, they were even more motivated to get these wins.”
The Lancers swept the season series with PLNU on their way to a 19-1 conference record. CBU outscored the fifth-ranked Sea Lions, 21-3, in four wins this year.
Tuesday's nightcap looked as though it was on its way towards some seventh-inning drama, but the Lancer bats exploded scoring three runs in the fifth and five in the sixth to end the game early. Back-to-back homers by Sarah Strong and Boyd provided the grand finale for a day when CBU hit six home runs and scored 14 runs on 24 hits.
The game had gone back and forth for the first four innings before the offensive outburst by the Lancers. Point Loma jumped out to an early one-run lead in the first, but CBU would counter in the third getting two runs on Kendall Gorham's 18th home run of the year.
The Sea Lions answered quickly with two in the fourth, but Boyd was just warming up, hitting a solo shot in the bottom half of the inning for her second home run of the day, first of the game.
Emma Holden got the win for CBU in the nightcap, pitching 2.1 innings and giving up no runs, no hits and no walks. She replaced Melanie Ahumada in the fourth after Ahumada allowed two runs in the inning. Tyler Lent took the loss for the Sea Lions.
The early game was a closer contest to the end as the Lancers' Tory Ferreira outdueled the GSAC Pitcher of the Week Lent and Hannah Faria to lead CBU to a 3-0 victory.
Ferriera threw seven innings giving up only two hits, one walk and no runs for the complete game shutout. She didn't give up a hit in the first five innings.
CBU's three runs in the game were all scored by way of the long ball with Boyd hitting a two-run shot in the second and Mara Rodriguez hitting a solo-shot in the fourth. Boyd's homer in the second was the first given up by Lent this season.
“I am so proud of the way the girls played not only today, but all season long,” said Smith. “The way we swung the bats tonight was really indicative of how we have played all year. It was close, but they didn't panic. All the girls knew they were going to get the hits needed and they came through. I couldn't have asked for a better way to win the GSAC.”
CBU improves to 49-1 overall, 19-1 GSAC while Point Loma Nazarene falls to 23-9, 13-7. The Lancers look to avenge their only loss of the season on Saturday when No. 8 Concordia comes to town. CBU then hosts No. 13 Cal State San Marcos next Tuesday and finish the regular season on the road against Vanguard.
