RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- An audible sigh of relief could be heard after Tina Galinato caught the final out Friday as No. 1 California Baptist University narrowly escaped with a sweep of William Jessup University.
CBU cruised to a 10-0 victory in the early game, but Friday's afternoon game was a nail-biting, 1-0, victory for the Lancers.
A third inning solo home run by Ashley Boyd was all the scoring that either team could muster as staunch pitching and spectacular defensive plays held the bats in check in the late game.
Boyd's homer was one of only four hits given up by the Warriors' Brianna Melgard who, after lasting less than two innings in the opener, went six innings to take her second loss of the day.
Kendall Gorham got the win for the Lancers, going four innings and giving up two hits and no walks. Melanie Ahumada pitched the final three innings for CBU to get the save. Ahumada gave up only one hit and struck out four with no walks.
Ahumada had to battle through some close calls after giving up a leadoff single in the seventh to guide her team to victory. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner into scoring position and brought up WJU's Tanya Perez who narrowly missed tying the game on a soft liner that fell just foul down the left field line. Perez would eventually strike out and Ahumada then got Traci Hart to line out to Galinato who made a charging catch on a sinking line drive.
The Warriors also threatened in the third when they had runners on first and second, but a brilliant diving catch by left-fielder Meagan Silva brought the crowd to its feet and kept the game scoreless.
In the sixth, CBU was looking to pad its 1-0 lead, but were also thwarted by a defensive gem. With a runner on first and only one out, Mara Rodriguez hit a ball that appeared to be headed for the gap, but Warrior right-fielder Ashley Mendez dove head first to make the catch.
The early game for the two teams had far less drama and far more offense for the Lancers as they got 10 runs on nine hits to win it in five innings.
Emma Holden made her return to the circle for CBU and pitched three strong innings to get the win. She allowed only one hit and struck out five to combine with Tory Ferreira for the one-hitter.
Sarah Strong hit the Lancers' lone home run in the game, a solo-shot in the third. Strong was 2-for-2 with two RBI in the opener.
The Lancers run their record to 45-1 while the Warriors fall to 20-15.
