LA MIRADA, Calif. --- For the second doubleheader in a row No. 1 California Baptist University had polar opposite games with the same results, defeating Biola, 2-0, in the opener and then blowing the Eagles out in the nightcap, 16-2.
The Lancers were coming off 10-0 and 1-0 wins against William Jessup in their previous doubleheader last week.
CBU got two runs in the second inning of Saturday's early game, and Tory Ferreira did the rest going seven innings giving up four hits, no walks and no runs for her 15th victory of the season.
A sacrifice fly by Mara Rodriguez and ground-rule double by Ashley Boyd in the second scored the Lancers' only two runs.
“We were hitting the ball hard but just right at the defense,” said Head Coach Mike Smith. “I told them before the second game that we just needed to keep the bats going and the runs would come.”
In the nightcap, CBU once again switched up the script and let the hits fly and the runs pour in for their second highest run total of the season. The only time the Lancers have scored more was on February 5 when they beat British Columbia 18-0. It is the 15th double-digit scoring game of the year for CBU, which now has 388 runs on the season.
Sarah Hurlbut hit a grand slam in the second to break open a ten-run inning. Hurlbut took the first pitch thrown by Eagle reliever Lyndsie Roberts over the center field wall.
Boyd and Jordan Flora also homered. Boyd's solo home run was on the first pitch of the game, and Flora had a solo shot in the fourth.
“Boyd really set the tone for us with the lead-off homer in the second game,” said Smith. “Hurlbut's homer then broke it open and we just took off.”
CBU scored 16 runs on 14 hits to end the game in five innings.
Melanie Ahumada got the win for CBU going four innings giving up five hits and two runs. Emma Holden pitched the final inning of the day and struck out two of the three batters she faced.
CBU improves to 47-1 overall and 17-1 GSAC, while Biola falls to 17-17, 7-11. The Lancers hold a four-game conference lead over Point Loma Nazarene, which comes to town Tuesday for a highly anticipated doubleheader. A sweep of the Sea Lions would clinch the Lancers' seventh straight GSAC title.
