KANSAS CITY, Mo. --- The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics released the bracket for the 2010 Avista-NAIA World Series Friday afternoon.
California Baptist University is the third seed and plays sixth-seed Oklahoma City Friday (May 28) in the prime-time game at 7:30 p.m. The Lancers are making their second trip to the World Series and first since 1997.
The 10-team, double-elimination tournament begins Friday May 28 and runs until June 4. It is being hosted by top-seed Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) at Harris Field in Lewiston, Idaho. The tournament has had an average attendance of more than 2,200 people a game the past three years, including a tournament-record 5,075 at last year's 7:30 p.m. game on the first day—the same game the Lancers are playing this year.
“The exciting part is to be in the tournament, but it's even more exciting to be in the feature game on opening night against one of the best teams that has historically done so well here,” said CBU Head Coach Gary Adcock, the GSAC Coach of the Year. “It will be quite a test but an exciting challenge for us.”
The Lancers punched their ticket to Idaho by winning group two of the NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round, defeating 10th-ranked Madonna (Mich.), 11-4, in the championship game at Totman Stadium. The Lancers (48-13) swept through the five-team tournament that had three of the top 15-ranked teams without a loss.
Oklahoma City (49-14) is making its 12th trip and third straight to the World Series. The Stars are 36-21 all-time at the World Series, winning the 2005 national championship. Their 36 wins are the second-most wins behind Lewis-Clark State's 117. LC State has won 16 national titles.
The Lancers and Stars last played in 2006. They split two games with the Stars winning 10-4 and the Lancers bouncing back with a 7-5 win. Both games were played in Oklahoma City.
There are eight conferences represented, and the Golden State Athletic Conference has two teams as conference-rival Point Loma Nazarene, which finished third in the GSAC, makes its second straight appearance. The Sea Lions play Friday at Noon against Belhaven (Miss.) with the winner playing Lewis-Clark State Saturday at 7 p.m. The Sooner Athletic Conference also has two teams as defending champion Lubbock Christian (Texas) joins Oklahoma City.
Should the Lancers win they will have two days off and will play second-seed Cumberland (Tenn.) (53-9) Monday (May 31) at 3 p.m. in the second round. If they lose, they will play the loser of seventh-seed Embry-Riddle (Fla.) and 10th-seed Tennessee Wesleyan Saturday (May 29) at Noon in an elimination game.
All 19 World Series games can be watched live online for just $24.95 for the entire tournament or just $8.95/day.
