RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Any frustration California Baptist University may have had from Thursday's 2-1 win over unranked Kansas Wesleyan was vanquished in a flash Saturday.
The NAIA's No. 8-ranked Lancers got three goals from three different scorers in a 16-minute span in the first half and raced past No. 20 College of Idaho, 4-1, Saturday afternoon. It is the Lancers' second straight win.
The win not only improves CBU to 4-1 but it gives Head Coach Kristen St. Clair her 50th career victory tying her with Marc Dale for the most coaching victories in program history.
The Yotes suffer their first loss and drop to 2-1.
"This was a much better performance than the other day,"
said St. Clair, whose career record now stands at 50-16-4 in just five seasons
at the helm. "Our offense had a nice rhythm to it all day. This is a nice step
forward and the next step in our journey of getting to where we want to get
this year. It starts all over next weekend when we play again."
The Lancers travel to Kentucky next week to participate in the KELME Classic
hosted by national-power Lindsey Wilson. CBU plays No. 5 Martin Methodist (Tenn.)
Friday and then the tournament-host and No. 6 Lindsey Wilson Saturday.
But today, Fabiola Zanella da Silva scored twice and had an assist, and Jacquelyn Witz had two assists to lead the Lancer charge. Witz now has 79 career points, moving her within four points of eighth place on the Lancers' career chart.
In the first of three straight games against
nationally-ranked NAIA teams, the Lancers put together a crisp first 45
minutes. Meanwhile, the Yote defense, which hadn't allowed a goal in two wins
this year, sprung a leak.
da Silva got things started in the 29th minute. Bernadette Witz
carried the ball diagonally from the left to the right past a trio of defenders.
Her final touch went to the feet of her sister, Jacquelyn Witz, who played it back
to Kyrie Nicassio, who dumped the ball into the area. Da Silva rose above the
defense and put a header into the net.
In the 37th minute, the Witz sisters hooked up again. This time,
Jacquelyn got to the end line on the left side then cut past a Yote defender
and ripped a shot that was deflected by another defender but trickled right to
Bernardette, who easily beat Melissa Holmes to make it 2-0.
Then, 20 seconds from intermission, da Silva dumped a ball into the area where Kylee Nicassio was waiting. Nicassio lifted a high header over Holmes and into the net scoring for the second straight game.
da Silva scored again in the 50th minute when she one-touched a cross from Megan Merrett, who sprung down the right side after a nice through ball from Kyrie Nicassio.
The Yotes, who only had two shots on goal, finally got on the board in the 66th minute when Amanda Boyce picked up a loose ball in the area and lifted it over Lancer keeper Nicoline Jorgensen.
The Lancers nearly got a fifth goal, but Courtney Sewell's bender hit the post in the 71st minute.
The Lancers out-shot the Yotes, 25-10, including a hefty 14-3 margin on goal.
