RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- NCAA Division II No. 14-ranked Cal State L.A. scored two second half goals and downed California Baptist University, 3-1, in a non-conference match between national powers in their respective associations.
The loss is the Lancers' first of the season as they fall to
2-1. It is just the Lancers' fifth loss at home since 2007.
The Golden Eagles move to 1-0, winning their only non-conference game of
their season.
CBU hadn't allowed a shot in its first two games, a span of 180 minutes. That streak ended in the first two minutes today as the season's first shot against the Lancers hit paydirt. Amanda Taylor played a ball over the Lancer defense, and Ann Marie Tangorra snuck in behind and flicked it over a charging Nicoline Jorgensen just 1:43 into the game.
It was the first of two goals for Tangorra.
The Lancers wasted no time responding, though, as Lizzy Bendrick put home her second goal of the season in the 10th minute. Fabiola Zanella da Silva worked her down the left side of the defense and played a ball across to Bernadette Witz, who one-timed it to Bendrick for the equalizer.
The complexion of the game changed in the final seconds of the first half when the Lancers seemingly broke the 1-1 deadlock with a goal off a free kick. However, the Lancers were called for offside despite the ball being deflected into the goal by a CSULA defender.
"The momentum definitely swung with that call," said CBU Head Coach Kristen St. Clair. "We definitely want to focus on the things we can control, but that made a difference today, and it's always unfortunate when officiating decisions get in the way of the game."
The Lancers out-shot the Golden Eagles, 19-9, and controlled the run of play but were caught three times on the counter by the speedy attackers of the Golden Eagles. It cost them.
Early in the second half, Cal State L.A. broke away again, and Alex Conley got in on Jorgensen. The keeper made the initial save as she went to the ground, but the ball bounced away, and Marissa Pickett beat everyone to it and poked it into the net for a 2-1 lead in the 54th minute.
Tangorra put the game away in the 88th minute when she got on a breakaway after getting a ball from Stacy Rodwell, easily beating Jorgensen.
"I felt like we dominated the play, and it was real unfortunate to have that goal called back right at the end of the half," said St. Clair. "We were unlucky in our finishing, but we had some very good opportunities. Cal State L.A. is a very, very good team, and we played well against them. Hopefully we'll learn from this and move forward and get ready for Thursday."
Jorgensen made one save. Cal State L.A.'s Jessie Walworth made two saves. Only three of the Lancers' 19 shots were on frame. Four of the Golden Eagles' nine shots were on target.
