SANTA CLARA, Calif. --- What goes around apparently comes around, at least in the case of the California Baptist women's water polo team. After suffering a tough one-goal loss against the 19th ranked Tigers of Pacific, the Lancers (5-5) drove to Santa Clara to dish the Broncos their second home loss of the season in a 6-5 bout.
Petra Kovacs led the way for CBU with four goals on the day (two in each match). Molly Gritchen and Christina Webb each posted three scores on the day (both notched two goals in the win).
The first match of the day was a back and forth affair that wasn't decided until the last possession. Both teams alternated goals in the first quarter to end the opener tied at twos. The Lancers then went on a 3-1 run to take a 6-4 run thanks to goals by Kovacs, Mallory Montano, and Kylie Chevalier. The Tigers responded however with a 3-1 run of their own through the second a third quarter to tie the match at 7-7 heading into the fourth. After three scoreless minutes, Pacific broke the tie with a goal to take an 8-7 lead. CBU failed to find the back of the net over the next four minutes, but were given a golden opportunity with a 6-on-5 situation with less than a minute left. The Lancers, however, were unable to convert, extending their losing streak to three (all against top-20 opponents).
CBU then drove nearly two hours from Stockton to Santa Clara to face the Broncos. The two teams swapped goals in the opening quarter to end the first knotted at 1-1. The home team then outscored CBU 3-1 in the second to head into the half up 4-2. The Lancer responded by shutting out the Broncos while scoring two goals to take a 5-4 lead into the fourth. CBU held the Broncos to one goal in the final period and scored once to seal their fifth win of the season.
Camryn Rogers had seven saves in the match, and three Lancers scored two goals (Gritchen, Webb, and Kovacs). CBU will head back to Riverside for home matches against Concordia and Grove City next week.
