RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Petra Kovacs exploded for five goals as the California Baptist women's water polo team won its third straight with a 15-3 win over Grove City (Pa.). The Lancers (7-5) went largely unchallenged by the Wolverines (1-1) in Jon Miller's (Grove City's Head Coach and CBU alumnus) return to the Lancer Aquatic Center.
CBU opened the match with a goal, but Grove City struck back with one of its own. The Lancers then went on a 5-1 run which included five different scorers; Rebecca Zens, Doris Tran, Kylie Chevalier, Molly Gritchen, and Alyssa Birch. The Wolverines scored twice in the second quarter to end the half behind at 8-3.
CBU shut out Grove City in the second half, whiled adding seven goals despite 11 saves (six in the third quarter) from Amanda Johnston. The win gave the Lancers their fifth home win of the season in six matches, and was the first ever meeting between the two schools.
Kovacs added three steals and two assists to her five-goal performance, while Christina Webb posted another two-goal performance and also notched three steals.
Eight Lancers scored on the match, while Camryn Rogers and Kristen Post combined for four saves in split duty. Nicole Berry and Chevalier tallied two scores, as Birch added a goal and three steals.
Neither team fared particularly well in the 6-on-5 game. CBU scored once in four tries, while Grove City went 0-9 with a player-up advantage.
Grove City's Miller was a four-year starter at goalie for the men's water polo team. The Lancers' all-time saves leader (1,025) is 18-15 in his second season at the helm for the Wolverines.
